The sky is neither pink nor purple. High-level clouds look like balls of cotton, and the only sound is that of the shuttle’s engine, as it hums to its hum.

A vast plain of anti-industrialisation forms a zig-zag landscape. Buildings stacked like dominoes, the highest being a pyramid-shaped tower. In the distance, an infinite flurry of solar panels and turbines.

Lights from the buildings occupy the sky, row after row, stacked like piano keys. And the lifts, as fluid as hot oil, travel from floor to ceiling. The atmosphere is warm, dense. Reminiscent of a gladiator pit.

“You see these people…” said the captain.

“Yeah,” said Lock

“It’s a place for the untouchable.”

“Untouchable?”

“Yeah…”

“We are looking down on a city of the future. He said, shifting the shuttle into auto-pilot. “A place where gigantic buildings dwarf the ancient skyscrapers, and colourful advertisements hug the side of buildings. The atmosphere is clean, pristine. There’s nothing like it.” He said. “The people, the businesses, so high yet so planted, not a sniff of regression, an ounce of regret.”

“Are these people chosen?”

“Chosen?”

“To be here…I mean… ”

“It’s a place for the fearless and confident,” said the captain. “People with patience. Not aristocrats, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

A moment passes. Pure silence.

“Shall we see how the other half live?” Said the captain.

Lock leans over to the window. “You mean… down there?” he said.

“Yeah,” he said.

Lock thinks for a second. “Uh… sure…”

All of a sudden, the temperature plummets.

The warm colours disappear and cool, cold greys fill the atmosphere. Water droplets form and scurry and gather at the window’s cill. The wipers move frantically from left to right, like a jacked-up tube man. As the shuttle gathers speed, the buildings above bunch together like a pack of hyenas ready to pounce. And the zig-zag landscape forms a straight line. It is now a barrier to entry. The temperature plummets for the final time.

Plumes of dust shoot up from the earth, the colour of ash. Murky light flickers through the dusty windows, revealing menacing shapes on the horizon. Pure silence. Well, aside from the captain’s heavy breathing.

“Holy fuck,” said Lock aloud.

“Different down here, ey?”

“Sure is…” he said. “How do people live this way?”

Background Texture

Remains of cars and buildings make up the landscape, on a backdrop of inky smog. As soon as the dust settles more starts to fall. The mood is sombre. There is light, but it’s twitching, like a cat’s whiskers at the smell of raw fish.

Background Texture

The streets are bare and littered in more ways than one. Trash cans overflowing. Bin bags blowing. Beggars beg while prostitutes prostitute. In the darkness, groups loiter in the alleyways, shifting crack to the addicted. And that’s everyone. There’s not a soul who doesn’t crave more. Can you blame them?

Background Texture

It’s a hopeless place. Occasionally someone might turn up, but don’t bank on it. Welcome to the the Unranked sector.
